Water treatment solutions for irrigation on farms

Water purification for irrigation

Agriculture cannot be imagined without water consumption. It's not even about the need for water for the needs of livestock. Although both cattle and smaller animals (valuable fur animals, rabbits), as well as birds, equally need a clean liquid for drinking. Crop production is the main consumer of water, where purification is required for the needs of irrigation and irrigation.

Why do you need water treatment on farms

Cultivation of a crop is unthinkable without periodic watering of the planted plants. If in an area where rainfall is regular, this is not so important, in more arid places irrigation simply cannot be done. Regular irrigation is even more necessary in greenhouse farms, which are deprived of natural atmospheric (rain) moisture supply, but consume large volumes of water every day. For example, the most popular greenhouse vegetables: cucumbers and tomatoes are 90-95% water, so they need systematic abundant watering.

However, water for these needs can come from a wide variety of sources and be of varying quality. Water from a river or lake differs significantly in composition from moisture coming from an artesian well. The cleanest is water from the municipal water supply system, but its cost is so high that considering it as a source for irrigation means doom the economy to ruin.

Usually water from natural sources is used and therefore, most often, water purification for irrigation is required. If small farms cannot afford high-quality water treatment for irrigation, then for large farms this is absolutely necessary. Otherwise, the water used without preliminary purification can clog the nozzles of the irrigation system and damage valves, pumps and other equipment. For example, used for heating water in a greenhouse.

Water filters for irrigation

Water purification during irrigation should be related to the purpose of its use and to the source of its receipt. Sometimes it is enough to filter the water from solid particles and you can already use it for irrigation. In other cases, a deeper water treatment of irrigation is required, which cleans from iron compounds and hardness salts, from algae, bacteria and zooplankton.

Mechanical filters for water purification for irrigation

When irrigating large cultivated areas, water from open reservoirs is usually used, since it is most economically profitable. At the same time, water from these surface sources is considered the most polluted and must necessarily pass through mechanical cleaning filters. Pre-filters for drip irrigation water protect pumps and other equipment from stones, sand, scale and suspended matter. The most common are mesh and disc filters.

Iron removal (in combination with aeration)

Often it is not enough to get rid of only sand in water and it is required to filter solutions of metals and minerals. Most often, water treatment is required for farms, which includes a deferrization unit. There are two main methods for water purification in agriculture from ferrous iron: reagentless and using chemicals.

  • The most popular method for preparing water for irrigation is considered to be reagent-free for its efficiency, simple technical solution and the relative cheapness of equipment. Cleansing takes place without the intervention of the owner, there is no need for constant maintenance and the purchase of chemicals. At the first stage of the water purification process for irrigation, the process of water saturation with oxygen takes place, which converts the iron into an insoluble trivalent form. After settling, metal particles are removed by mechanical filters. At the second stage, water is passed through the backfill with manganese dioxide. This clears it of iron residues.
  • At a high concentration of dissolved iron, the purification method using an oxidizing agent (potassium permanganate) is very effective. The disadvantage of this method is the need for constant monitoring of the level of the chemical and its periodic refueling.

Ion exchange water filters for drip irrigation

Metals dissolved in water, including iron, can be removed especially effectively with synthetic resins. The method of water treatment for irrigation is expensive and complex, but it is optimal for high concentrations of divalent metals and, if necessary, water softening.

Reverse osmosis - a method of purifying water for irrigation from salts

This method of water preparation for irrigation of plants belongs to the group of membrane water purification methods. It requires a lot of electricity, constant maintenance of equipment and the output is practically distilled water, devoid of all microelements necessary for plants. Reverse osmosis water treatment is not suitable for garden irrigation. This inhibits the development and growth of fruit and berry and vegetable crops.

What do drip irrigation water treatment systems help to get rid of?

Water available for irrigation of cultivated areas is polluted not only by small stones and sand. There are sources in which the liquid is saturated with hardness salts, solutions of heavy metals (including iron compounds), organic impurities, etc. Purification of water for irrigation from the above content will relieve equipment from clogging and breakage, rust formation, etc. problems.

The main advantages of filters for water purification for irrigation

The most important burden for water treatment for farms from surface sources is borne by mechanical filters. New technological solutions make it possible to flush the mesh filters without interrupting the water supply for irrigation. All components of the disc filters are made of frost-resistant plastic, which protects them from corrosion and low temperatures (provided that the water is drained from the system before the cold season).
